Whew, that was a close one.

OK, so this past 4 weeks has been, well, interesting. I ended up in the hospital suffering 2 strokes from a severely torn artery. I came very close to not making it…..scary stuff. I have been in serious healing mode the last month and figuring out what I can and cannot do. I have had to slow myself way down (very, very hard for me as I am a multi-tasking queen) and tell myself that I cannot do everything all the time. My hope is that I can parlay this thinking into creativity and, most importantly, calmness. I have still been pouring a few candles here and there, but haven’t been back to the blending of my lovely perfumes. I hope to get back to that next week after a short vacation to the Oregon Coast. I am feeling much better. Just the anesthesia alone kicked my behind! Thanks for the words of support and love. Will be back to some more blogging soon. I have some new perfumes to list as well on my Rebel & Mercury Etsy shop.

Massage Candles-My take on them

I get asked a lot about whether I make massage candles. You know, the ones that you can take the melted candle wax and rub it into your skin. After being asked this many times, I wanted to share my take on this product with you and it's safety.

Using soy on your skin:
Soy wax, even the best out there which I currently use, is heavily processed and can be hormonally disruptive. To get the bean from it's original form to an edible or topical-use form is a long process. Hexane is widely used to pull oils out of plant-based materials and that substance, itself, is toxic. Hexane is used in 98% of the soy wax producer's processes. For this reason alone I do not use it on my skin. My soy wax is some of the cleanest you will find and I chose it for that reason. Until soy wax becomes readily available in Organic Certified formats, it will be difficult to find a better one than this. Using it in small doses here and there is ok, but it is not the best for your skin.

Fragrance Oil or Essential Oil concentrations for candles are too high for topical use:
When I create my candles, the Essential Oil blends I use are fairly high. Low enough to respect the oil's flashpoint, but high enough to get a strong-smelling candle. That concentration is far too high to use on the skin. You cannot have a strong-smelling candle and a skin-safe blend at the same time. The concentrations are very different. The use of high concentrations of EO's and FO's on the skin, make it difficult for your liver to handle.

Dipping your finger in freshly melted wax is generally not a good idea:
I have to admit, I have burned myself one too many times pouring my candles, testing them, and spilling a lit one on my hands. While soy wax burns much cooler (which is why it burns so much longer than Paraffin wax), it is still hot wax. I do not recommend dipping your finger in wax that has just melted. It is generally too hot for the skin even if it isn't "burning you". You skin is very resilient, but it responds best to mildly warm temperatures.

What I recommend:
If you want to create a luxurious lotion that is warm to the touch, I recommend this:
There are many great products on the market that are created for this. Generally, balms are the best if you want to heat something up before putting on your skin. Products made from Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Cocoa butter, beeswax are best for this. They withstand the higher temperatures well (though not too hot is important to keep in mind). You can create a really healthy massage lotion with a combination of Virgin Coconut Oil and Cocoa Butter. You can then add a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil or Rose to make it more fragrant. There are also high quality fragrance oils you can purchase that would work as well.

To sum it up, keep the candles for ambience and keeping your home fragrant. You will do your body a favor.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I am still here and creating beautiful, lovely smelling things. In the next few weeks you will get a sneak preview of the new perfume line. All GA Essence perfumes will be sold under a new name and get a complete revamp! Perfumes will be available in Perfume Oils as you have come to expect from me and 2 new formats: Pure Parfum and EDP. All the candles will remain at Gabriel's Aunt's website and Etsy shop, but look for a new store front for the perfumes. One or 2 of the current perfumes I sell under GA Essence will be retired and some new ones will be there too. So, don't panic! Look for the big announcement coming next week with perfumes ready by end of the month. Thanks for following and see you soon!

Some mid-Summer yummies!

Wow, a month has gone by since my last post. Whew! I have been a busy gal. I wanted to share some new product info with you as they will be out very soon. First, "Corbieres" perfume will be ready to sell by end of next week. This blend is my tribute to the beautiful notes of the wines that come from Corbieres (an appellation in the Languedoc region of France). The grapes grown here are known for their hints of Currant, Cocoa and various spices. I have blended 3 types of Ginger, Cardamom, Saffron, Black Currant and Cocoa for a rich, complex, fruity and spicy perfume. I love how it reminds me of a full-bodied, slightly sweet red wine. I am also finishing the newest candle in the Just For Fun line called "Biscotti". This is a really fun blend that has generous amounts of Almond, Ginger, Vanilla and topped of with some sparkling Lemon. Another great Summer candle and just sweet enough to satisfy those dessert lovers. As my cream perfume solids are becoming more and more popular, I am expanding that line to include a gorgeous Tuberose solid. This Tuberose is an intensely sweet single note perfume that will wear perfectly alone or layered with other natural perfumes. As with my other blends, the raw beeswax adds a lovely depth and honey note. The old votives are almost gone and the labels for the 2 ounce tins are in the works. I am excited for the new size as there is less packaging involved and less to throw away! They will be super portable and refillable. So, mid-Summer is packed with new goodies. Stay tuned for them coming in the next 2 weeks!

Some improvements!

After feedback from customers over the past year, I have decided to discontinue my 1.5 ounce votives (seen above) for more practical 2 ounce travel tins. While the votives have been a good seller for me, I think you will enjoy being able to just light these candles and go. You won't have to search for a holder that fits or worry about an uneven burn. The tins will be a bit bigger in volume as well so you will get more candle! I will be phasing out the votives in the next month and introducing the tins at the end of the summer. The Trouble with Being a Gemini

Ah, yes. You probably know one of them: Those temperamental, moody and, dare I say, charming folks. You probably have one as a boss, a best friend, a brother or sister. We Geminis are an interesting bunch. We have tons of passion, but with so much we can't choose one thing to spend our energy on. We are witty, yet can be cutting in our humor. We are incredibly restless. Pinning us down on something from an opinion to a commitment can take the patience of Job and the charm of a used car salesman. We like variety and always want to learn something new and exciting. In all my years in the Film business (about 15 plus now), I have learned to tap into this extreme part of me. The Film world, alone, takes a special breed (we are kind of like Carni folk traveling from one city to another setting up our little exotic worlds) and when you are a Gemini in this field you thrive. No job is ever the same. You meet new people every time. I love it and miss it when I am away. I bounce back and forth quite a bit these days from my life in Film to my life as a natural perfumer and candle-maker. Sometimes I feel like someone is going to ask me to just pick and that thought frightens me. I am learning to embrace my crazy world of dual careers. I have done some amazing things in my life in both worlds and can't imagine just picking one. Geminis are ultimately two people existing in one body. Giving each twin a chance to be creative makes us happy and balanced. I am learning more about how to focus my energy, yet still have a lot further to go. I pay attention to those people in my life who carry themselves with grace and extreme talent. I have many mentors in the film world (too many to mention) and those in the perfume world like Ayala Sender of Ayala Moriel Parfums and Roxana Villa of Illuminated Perfumes are kind, talented and giving. I pay attention to people like this as they also balance their lives in a beautiful way. I will be tapping into the perfumer side of me more in the next few months and hope to come up with some brand new things. I look forward to hearing from readers about what they might be juggling in their lives and what they are creating. Whether or not you are a Gemini, we all have the creative Twin just under the surface. Set it free!

Seattle showers bring lovely May flowers

I am very excited and honored to participate in this fragrant May Flowers Blog Project hosted by Roxana of Illuminated Perfume. Please check out the other wonderful posts throughout this month celebrating the lovely month of May here.

In March of 2005, this Texas gal became a Seattleite. I spent March through late May of that year wondering "Does the sun EVER come out here? Where are my 80 degree temperatures?!" After weeks of clouds, rain and cold (and walking around in sweatshirts most of the time), the first sunny and warm day arrived in May and, with it, a variety of vegetation I had never seen in North Texas. I had always heard from locals that late Spring and Early Summer are why you live here. Well, 5 years later, I have experienced, first hand, that amazement of how incredibly beautiful this area can be. It was also around this time that I was transitioning from a candle maker to a perfumer and I felt like a kid in a candy store experiencing the fragrant offerings of this area. What amazed me was I was surrounded by Lilacs everywhere I turned. Lilacs of all varieties grow wild here and range from deep, intensely purple (like the Klager Double Purple growing in my Mother's yard shown above) to gorgeous white blossoms (like the Edith Cavell below). Lilacs, in the Spring, are one of the very first flowers to bloom up here and, sadly, the first to leave us. I always miss the smell that permeates the warm air when you are around them. Perfumers covet the scent as it encompasses all that is sexy and sweet.

Recently, my thoughts and sniffer have been obsessed with another fragrant wonder of the Pacific Northwest, Pieris Japonica or Lily of the Valley Bush. While this fragrant bush is not native to the area (it is native to the Far East), it grows very well in the soil here and in the salty air of the coast. It adorns many fences in the area making it lovely for those who enjoy the evening stroll. It reminds me of when I was a kid walking with my friends while stopping to sniff and taste the sweet Honeysuckle growing wild in the neighborhood.

As a Texan, you don't go too long without participating in this ritual. I blogged a few weeks ago about how inspired I was to create a a honeysuckle/white florals/woodsmoke blend. This inspiration came with my first sniff of these urn-shaped flowers on warm evening stroll. There was the scent of burning wood in the air and the Lily of the Valley bushes were starting their bloom. I am often drawn to memories of Spring and Summer in North Texas and the Lily of The Valley Bush takes me back there while welcoming me to Seattle's Springtime. Unfortunately, these bushes and their fragrant blooms are poisonous, but I will continue to enjoy them until they are gone. These flowers have fragrantly guided me through my new journey as a Pacific Northwest girl and perfumer.

May we all be lucky enough to have a chance to always sniff these May flowers.

Thanks to all that showed up at the NorthWest Cellars Trunk Show this past Saturday. It was a lot of fun and I can still taste the amazing wines and chocolates! I was really excited to debut some new candles and perfumes there: "Currant" with Currant, Vanilla and Yuzu, "Lokum" with Lemon, Rose and Mint and "Torte" with Almond, Frangipani and Amber. They went over so well! Thanks to Betsey with EllieBluebell for coordinating this event with NorthWest Cellars. I had a great time. What do I do anyway?

Seems like Earth Day is becoming more like Earth Month or week which is alright by me! Whatever helps and reminds us that life and environment are fragile is a good thing. I wish I knew exactly how many things I have changed in my life once made aware of the impact we have made on Mother Earth. I can list some things I do daily now and are basically second nature: (1) I compost like crazy: Coffee grounds, paper towels, veggies, fruits, breads, etc. Anything that will go in there, I will put. I recycle paper like crazy. Sometimes it seems that my paper issues are something I must have been born with because I am constantly surrounded by and sorting through paper. I rarely pour water down a drain anymore. I usually pour left over water from a cup of tea or pasta cooking into a planter or outside. I am slightly obsessive about this particular activity. I only use organic facial, body and makeup products now (I couldn't have said this last year this time). The list goes on and on. As far as my company goes, I made the commitment a long time ago to put all the money into 2 things: the candle or perfume itself and the labels. I don't spend money on fancy gift boxes. The tops of my glass votive candles are covered with a simple recycled paper seed top. It's compostable, plantable and recyclable. I use simple handmade pillow boxes from a company in Vancouver, B.C. for my perfumes. All of my containers and packaging can be sent back to me for re-use or be re-used by the customer. My soy wax is Kosher, Free of GMO material, pesticides and herbicides. That is what I do for Mother Earth. Earth day and the idea behind it have greatly impacted how I live my life and run my business so thank you to those who brought awareness to us. Happy Earth Day everyone.

Honeysuckle and Smoke

OK, so I am going a little nuts right now with the overwhelming amount of scents around me lately. As a perfumer and candle maker, I want to make every good smell into something I can burn or wear on my skin. Several walks through different Seattle neighborhoods have produced a new inspiration for perfume (always a great thing!). One walk, in particular, through the Capitol Hill neighborhood brought together a mix of scents that took me straight to Summertime. It was one of the warmer evenings we have had lately and people were outside grilling and enjoying their evenings. We walked past a group of incredibly fragrant flowering vines; reminiscent of Honeysuckle and then, poof!, a whiff of someone's wood burning grill. I was overwhelmed by the combination of the wood smoke and the sickly-sweet honey and floral combination. As the smoke permeated our clothing and skin, we would pass another of these white-flowering vines and I would get the combination of sweat, skin, wood smoke and honey florals. Amazing and like nothing I have ever experienced. My obsession is now taking the form of my newest perfume. Name is TBD, but it will be an amazing blend. I am hoping to get it finished by the end of the month in time for some of my Spring/Summer events. If anyone knows the name of the gorgeous-smelling white flower, please let me know. I do not have a pic so it will be hard to identify from my post here (the pic above is Honeysuckle) I may try to take a picture of it on the next walk we take as they seem to be everywhere. Hope everyone had a great Easter and Seder.

Turn The Lights Out

Tonight, people all over this planet will take one hour to give our planet a much needed rest from electro-magnetic waves. Turning off lights, computers or unplugging electrical appliances or devices are all ways we give Planet Earth a nice break. Being a candle maker, I definitely enjoy this time to light my candles, meditate and just enjoy the quiet darkness. I encourage you to go through your house and turn off everything you can, light a naturally-scented, 100% beeswax or soy (or unscented) candle from your local natural foods store (or.....from me if you have one) and turn things off tonight!

OK, with any business, you cannot survive if you have a bad product right? Well, you also cannot survive trying to make something that everyone will like. Your company would go bankrupt at some point and your employees (and you) would become frustrated and lose focus. When you are a small business owner like me and make your products with your own little hands, well, customer satisfaction takes on a whole different meaning. Why? Because we want everyone to love our products to the point of fanaticism or our worlds come crashing down around us. OK, maybe that is just me, but I think you get my point. Artists/Crafters take all the feedback, good and bad, to mean that you don't like us or our stuff or you do. It is very hard to separate and only seasoned business owners realize the difference. There is no way to please everyone. Even if your product is flawless! So, this brings me to my point. How, as a customer or business owner, do you like to obtain or give feedback? Surveys? Asking for feedback after a purchase with an email? Etsy gives you the option with every sale or purchase to leave feedback as well as Ebay. How important is feedback and is it always constructive? Would love to hear your comments.

Meditation 101, Inspiration and Desert

About 6 weeks ago, I agreed to, with my BF, start taking meditation classes at a local Buddhist temple. Being the incredibly restless girl that I am, I knew this would be a challenge for me to just be still and observe life around me. Sitting still, turning the thoughts off that drive me to anxiety at times, and letting things come in and just be....these are thing that do not come naturally. I guess they don't to anyone. Well, last night was our last class (at least for this phase of it) and I left wanting to take this practice to a whole other level. I am inspired to calm my mind and live my life being present. Completely present. Now, this takes daily practice of which I am not certain I will complete, but I am going to try. If I fail, I will try again. This leads me to my feelings of inspiration the past few weeks and finishing a blend that has been in my head for some time. My brain and senses have been working overtime with all the early Spring blooming and the need to create is very strong right now. After coming back to my workshop once class was complete, I had the 2nd wind to put the finishing touches on a Violet/Cedarwood/Cognac blend I mentioned in a previous post. I added some Grapefruit, Sage, Myrrh, Champa and Pink Lotus as well as other oils. Most oils in this blend take me to a place of quiet reflection. I imagine sitting in the Desert taking the sounds of the dry earth in and smelling the bits of dirt, sage bush and blooming desert flowers. So, it made sense for me to call this new GA Essence blend, "Desert". It reflects my new found practice of quiet and being present while taking me to a place where you can do this freely. I will be listing this new perfume in the next week. Look for more new products as well!

Getting back to Blogging!

Hi all! It's been since October since I have blogged and now that my lovely friend Lena has fixed some snaffoos on here, I am going to be blogging again!

So, a quick update: I have a couple of new products in the works as we speak getting ready for an early Spring release. (1) My Violet/Cedar/Cognac perfume blend is getting closer to done. I am really excited about this one. It is so earthy, dry and takes my senses to a base instinct place. (2) Working on a cherry blossom/honey/almond accord. I have wanted to do this for a long time and after a few requests for this type of scent (plus the fact that I adore almond/cherry blossom); I am getting things in motion. (3) Frangipani candle will be the next Just For Fun blend. Gorgeously floral, intensely sweet and perfect to get Spring started. I estimate that by Mid-March I will have 2 of the 3 items ready to go.

I look forward to releasing more products soon and getting your feedback!

New scents for Fall!

I wanted to update everyone on some new items now available and ones still in the making for the Fall and Winter seasons.

First, I have listed the first of some new natural candle scents. "Warmth" is a blend I created for a candle making class taught recently. I wanted a lightly spiced candle with a bit of sweetness and floral so I took some Palmarosa, Coriander and Cassia along with some other notes and, voila! . It is one I have been burning almost daily and I love it. I think you will too.

"Southern Tea" is the second natural candle blend (I will be listing that today on Etsy and adding it to my website as well). "Southern Tea" is inspired by all those moments of drinking tea to comfort, warm or heal you. This is a blend of Chamomile, a hint of Mint and a bit of citrus and berry notes to sweeten. For all of you tea lovers out there, this will be a treat.

"Sucre" is a brand new GA Essence Natural Perfume blend inspired by some wonderfully sweet items I have been using lately in cooking. "Sucre" is a intense Gourmand with lots of spice to give it some attitude and withstand the Fall and Winter weather. I am very excited about this blend. I think it is fun and perfect for this time of year. I will be listing this on Etsy in the next day or so as well as my website.

Lastly, I have been asked over the years if I make a pumpkin-scented candle and I usually say "no" that I am not able to make a natural version. Well, I am getting inspired to find a way to create one that is truly pumpkin, but with a natural twist of course! So, stay tuned as I am working on creating one that will satisfy all the pumpkin fans out there.

There is a lot being said lately about the germs, bacteria and viruses that surround us every day. From the Swine Flu, to Influenza to the common cold, we are taught ways to fight and rid our lives of them so we won't become sick. If you are like me, you want to protect yourself and your loved ones, but you don't want to surround yourself with harmful chemicals or fill your body the newest FDA approved vaccination. You want to do things a bit more naturally. I encourage everyone to go into Fall and Winter with a new way of thinking when it comes to protecting yourself. Thoughts of sunshine, fresh fruit, warm air and great food come to mind as Summer finally hits the Pacific NorthWest. Summer definitely does something to us all and this time around, I am going to pay tribute to it with something that I can wear all year long. "Zeste" (French for Zest of a citrus fruit's peel) is my newest perfume creation. Inspired by Ginger and Citrus, I took Notes of Organic Ginger EO, Lemon Verbena, Jasmine and Sandalwood and turned them into a flirty, sexy and light blend. This blend opens up with a citrus/mint/ginger accord and slowly takes you into a slightly floral and sweet citrus heart then settles into an Amber/Sandalwood accord. "Zeste" will take you through your hot Summer days and into the warm Summer nights. It is a blend that just makes me smile every time I smell it. OK, so finally I have gotten around to taking the first pic of my new Bohem candle. I have been trying to get to this for a month now and with my move and life getting in the way, I have not had much time. Bohem (like the perfume) is a fabulous blend of Tobacco, Amber, Patchouli and Vetiver. This combination is so unique, warm and sultry that it will be perfect to burn on a warm summer night. This is the first time I have used Tobacco or Amber in a candle and I am so thrilled with the results. The perfume has done well and I hope the candle does too. I hope to have pics of the votive and travel tin done this week. Moving and New Creations

So Spring has gotten off to a busy start. Although, most days haven't felt so Spring-like, I am still feeling a bit inspired to create new things and dive into my library of scents. I have several absolutes that have been calling to me for a while; one of those being Immortelle. This is a very difficult one to work with since the consistency is so thick and sticky, but I am determined to work with this exquisite element. This could prove to be a difficult task as my base for perfumes is Jojoba and not perfumer's alcohol. I am excited about the challenge though.

Due to the popularity of my "Bohem" pafum, I am now working on the candle version. It will not contain all of the same notes, but will be similar with Blonde Tobac and Amber making up the bulk of the blend. I think it will become one of my more popular blends. I plan on having this candle available at the end of May.

I will also be packing up my studio at the beginning of May and moving to my new digs in North Seattle. This is a good move for me as I am very limited on space currently and still have many of my personal items in storage from my last big move. I am really excited to make this move. My hope is that with the move I can focus more on making new products and getting my wholesale customer base to grow. Wish me luck everyone!

In love with Amber!

I have to admit that lately I am obsessed with Amber. Not the synthetic stuff found so frequently in incense and other products, but real Amber Resin. I have, in my library of scents, 2 amazing Ambers (both from Eden Botanicals). They have inspired so much creativity that I had to share some of the Amber-inspired products currently for sale and soon-to-be for sale. First, "Bohem", which is the latest in my unisex natural perfumes, now has a bit of amber rounding out the Oakmoss, Patchouli and Tobacco. At first, I loved the earthy and woodsy notes without any help from this resin, but when I added a small amount to the blend it blossomed. Now complete, "Bohem" has been getting rave reviews from those who have ordered it and tested it out for me. The blend is sexy, sultry, manly yet feminine.

Second, is my brand new bath salt blend with Amber, Rose and Cocoa. Initially, I made this blend for Valentine's Day and to celebrate romance (this is a VERY romantic blend). I will be keeping it in my Etsy shop and website for a few more months depending on how well it does. This blend is truly sexy (I keep using that word here folks!) and part of my attempt to create perfumed baths made with unique, rare and precious oils.

I am currently working on a blend that is heavily Amber and Rose. This blend is actually one I am creating for my sister and will probably be sold at a later date. We will see how this one develops.

Lastly, my candle line will soon carry a tobacco and amber blend. I wanted a tobacco based blend for the longest time and the 2 together are incredible. So, look for that one by end of Spring.

OK, so as you can tell, I am obsessed! If you haven't tried the Amber Essences from Eden, you need to. They are the best I have purchased and will inspire you too.

A little late, but better late than never! I just listed the votive version of Royal Couple with Jasmine and Rose in my Etsy shop. This is a really exquisite candle with real Rose, Real Jasmine Grandiflorum, Geranium and a little bit of citrus. It is really lovely and sensual; perfect for setting the mood on Valentine's Day. It is a tad more expensive than the other candles due to the nature of of the rare oils. I will be listing the tin and 8oz. versions soon. This is a gorgeous scent that you will fall in love with!

I am finally finished with my new Parfum called Bohem. Bohem was inspired by incense, woods, and other earthy notes. A few notes in this blend are Tobacco, Oakmoss, Vetiver, Allspice, Cassie and Davana. This is a really long lasting blend that just seems to get better as the hours go on. The earthy notes on the skin are so prevalent, but the Cassie and Davana round it out so that it isn't too intense. I only have a sample listed now, but will have the full size 1/4 oz. roll on listed soon. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do. I also just got some gorgeous Amber resin in and will be working on an Amber based blend over the next few weeks. Enjoy!!!

Three Little Words

Well, it is officially that time of year again when the New Year has begun and we are all trying to keep resolutions and then possibly blow them be the end of the month. Oh, it also that time of year for thinking about the ones that you love. St. Valentine's Day is just over a month away and so that means I am bringing back my very popular trio of sensual and aphrodisiac oil filled candles. "Three Little Words"™ is the trio candle gift set I created several years ago hoping to create a different and unique way to confess or express your love. So, I started with finding oils that helped convey that emotion by stirring our passion, aka, aphrodisiac oils. I created 3 candles that each contained at least one of these oils and knew I was on the right track. Then I needed a clever phrase for the package and since I had created three unique blends at that point I focused on three words: I Love You. Well, that makes sense! What could make it better? Well, burning them together and having each one symbolize those words and the phrase as a whole. Each candle can be burned separately, of course, but are so much better together. Here are the three blends originally created for this package:

"Slow Dance" for "I" with Sandalwood, Patchouli and spices

"Afternoon Nap" for "Love" with Black Pepper and Lavender

"Sweethear" for "You" with Ylang Ylang and Nutmeg

All three candles come poured in a 3oz. glass holder and will last 30-35 hours each. They come wrapped in a white gift box and are ready to give to your loved one. Each one of these scents is available in all my regular sizes year 'round and available on my website and in my Etsy shop.

Currently for sale is Royal Couple with Rose and Jasmine. Each Muslin bag contains .3 ounces of organically grown roses sprinkled with Jasmine Grandiflorum. You can use the bag as Bath Tea by dropping it in your bath and letting it infuse the water (up to 3 uses if you let the bag completely dry) or throw into your drawer and let it scent your clothing. Ah, Black Friday is finally here. The day where our overstuffed bodies get pulled out of bed at 3am so that you can save an extra bit of your cash on all those things you (or your family) want. I have not personally participated in this event in a couple of years now (sometimes I wonder if I am really missing out on the amazing deals) because I have decided to go hand made for the bulk of my gifts this year as I did last year. I Love Dirt!

Recently, I have been fairly obsessed with the earthy and woodsy scents. Maybe it is because I go outside into the Pacific NorthWest Fall air and am overcome by the amazing variety of rich scents that come from the Hemlocks, Fir trees or even the gigantic varieties of fungi that seem to grow at the speed of light here. I think for humans, the attraction to the smell of earth, grasses, leaves, barks and resins is innate. We need the minerals and the other elements to stay alive and nurtured. I tend to associate these oils with living and being free; like hiking up a mountain or swimming in the ocean or traveling from city to city or country to country without boundaries, it brings us closer to real living. So, saying all this, (at 4am, too early to be contemplating any of this really) I have been inspired to create my next blend called Bohem. Bohem is a blend of earthy and light blends like aged dark Patchouli, Oakmoss, Orange Essence, Davana, Vetiver and other oils. Like a traveling artist who is only bound by his ideas, Bohem will transport you to a another world and put you in touch with your free self. This blend will be available early in January and I think it will be a perfect way to kick of 2009.

What do you want under your tree?

I grew up looking forward to putting up the Christmas tree. Most years it was a fake one and so I just had to imagine what that freshly cut tree smell was like. On occasion, there was a real one, but for the most part picking out a tree was done at a local Kmart or other department store. When I first started my candle lines, I knew I had to come up with a Holiday scent that would make me always feel like I had a gorgeous smelling and decorated tree. Nicely decked with candy canes and shiny ornaments. That is what "Under The Tree" does for me. There have been several years where I did not put a tree up and so, in it's place, I burned this to give me that holiday scented lift! "Under The Tree" is a fresh and slightly sweet blend of Cedarwood, Pine and Peppermint and is sure to add a special something to your home or holiday event. My candles going greener!

I have been thinking for many months on the best way to start cutting back on the amount of packaging I use. I have always offered a recycling discount and encouraged people to discard of their candle packaging responsibly, but I wanted to make things a little easier. So, I started with my larger 8oz. candles. I have completely switched over from the square containers to a lovely round "rocks" holder. That was a good start. I really liked the new look of the round containers (maybe because I was tired of the other style) and thought "Why should I cover these up with anything?" I put a label on and liked the look, but I had to come up with some way to cover the candle and protect the oils. I knew it would have to be something made of paper (I didn't want a lid anymore) and what better paper than the kind that has been recycled already, is hand-made AND PLANTABLE! So, I contacted ClaudiasCreations on Etsy and had her make paper for me to use. She specializes in this so it was perfect. She makes gorgeous recycled seed paper and it looked great with my new look. Well, now I have updated some listings in my Etsy shop with the new packaging and listed some additional candles. So, it is a perfect time to try them if you haven't already. If you have, then come on back and see the greener packaging. I love it and I feel good about making the switch over!

Newsletter, Supporting Hand Made/Indie and Getting Ready for the Holidays

As we are all seeing, our economy is experiencing some challenges. Probably not the worst we/this country has ever seen, but nonetheless, scary. I really want to encourage all of you shoppers out there (and I am one of them) to shop Indie and hand made this year. If you buy from and support the small business owner, history shows, the economy gets stronger and other areas of the market will benefit. This is so important now and for the holidays. So, put your hard-earned money to good use and buy from shops your find through places like Etsy or your local markets and craft shows. You not only get to have one on one attention from the owner and creator of these goods, but you will more than likely get the best prices for that type of item.

So, I want to invite all my readers and customers to do a few things this coming month:

(1) Sign up for newsletters that these hand made shops publish because they almost always offer great discounts and previews of special sales and promotions. NOTE: If you click on my newsletter link on the left you can sign up for mine and I will be sending out great, great coupon offers and fun promos in the next 2 weeks and throughout the holidays!

(2) Buy at least one handmade item (if you have never bought handmade before) for the holidays. You will become addicted to it!

(3) Attend one of the many holiday bazaars or craft fairs happening at your neighborhood church, school or fair grounds. These are a great way to find out what people in your area are creating and a wonderful way to shop for the holidays. Many of these events have vendors that offer incredible discounts as an incentive to buy from them and get their products out there. You can usually get a leg up on people who order online as you can touch, sample and smell the products first hand and have confidence in the product you buy.

(4) Check out Indie Blogs like IndieFixx, IndieCollective, IndieLove and WickedlyChic. These Blogs know about Indie and frequently have reviews of sellers and items giving you an inside scoop on the newest wares and best sellers. You will also find that many of them offer Holiday Gift Guides that help you navigate the world of Indie and Hand made. Check them out!

History has shown that I am not good at picking out bags of any sort for myself, but as I have found shops on Etsy that sell them, I am becoming more and more obsessed and getting that talent down! Finally! I am sorry for my absence lately. I am a multi-tasking girl and have been working on a ton of different jobs lately. Feeling the need to spread the Summer Love!

So, I have to say I am in love with my Summer Love perfume; full of sweet floral and citrus notes and perfect for a hot summer day. I get a lot of compliments when I wear it and how it smells like summer. So, as I get back into my creative, blending mode, I wanted to see about creating a candle that would create the same feelings. What I came up with it quite delicious I have to say. My new candle, which will also be called Summer Love, is a gorgeous blend of orange blossom, jasmine, magnolia and sweet citrus just like my perfume. Now, this is not a candle version of it the perfume oil, but it will be similar in composition. I am working on the first batch now and I will be burning many of them myself around the house. I will be listing this in a few weeks in my Etsy shop and, if you are lucky, will do a pre-buy on it so you can be the first to try! Just had to share my creation with you! Perfumed Candles for Ayala Moriel Perfumes

I am very excited about a new partnership with my favorite Natural Perfumer, Ayala Sender of Ayala Moriel Parfums. Ayala and I have worked together to create the first of what I hope to be many perfumed botanical candles based on her current line of blends. The first creation for me was to take her fresh, summery and citrus-y blend called Arbitrary (notes of Lemon Verbena, Lime, Basil, Hay and Oakmoss) and turn that blend into a lovely perfumed candle, giving you an opportunity to experience Arbitrary in a whole new and different way. Ayala has a post on her blog about this partnership and when this amazing candle will be available for purchase. This candle will be sold exclusively at Ayala Moriel Parfums and will not last long. Here is a blurb from Ayala's "Smelly Blog":

"Last night the first sample of my perfumed candle arrived. You can imagine my feeling opening the package and discovering in it something that I did not make and that smelled exactly like my perfume ArbitRary... I was ecstatic.

The candle was custom-made for me by the talented artisanal candle-maker Nikki Sherritt of Gabriel’s Aunt. Nikki and I have been working on adding all-natural perfumed candles to my line since the fall. The first candle we worked on was Bois d'Hiver for the winter. The candle is not quite ready and we both felt it was time to create a different candle. I have been fantasizing of an ArbitRary candle ever since I’ve smelled Nikki’s masterfully crafted perfumed candles (and her Summer Vacation in particular convinced me that ArbitRary would be gorgeous in a candle form). The results haven’t failed: the candle has a cold throw that is nearly identical to the perfume. Audacious!

OK, I cannot wait anymore! I have to tell you all about my brand new perfume called "Audacious". Why that name? Well, because I think it says that whoever wears this wants to be noticed, has a little attitude and is confident. This is my first successful (if I do say so myself) attempt at creating a "Floriental" perfume (a combination of Floral and Oriental categories); notes of Pink Lotus Absolute and Tuberose were my inspirations and I added notes like Cassia and Linden Blossom as a sweet, yet spicy base. I added very light Top notes that would only bring out the heart and base, not overpower; like Petitgrain, lemon and Coriander. This is a sexy perfume that can be worn during the day as a lovely Summer Blend reminding you of the blossoming flowers of Spring and Summer and also at night with it's spice and sweet base. I had one of my best Etsy customers sample this blend and give me feedback. Here is what she says about "Audacious":

"When I think of floral perfumes I think of the stale perfume the old ladies wear at the grocery store. When I put Audacious on, it is indeed a wonderful blend of floral/spicy/sweet. They are all equally balanced, not overpowering one another. First you smell floral mixed with sweet...and then the afternotes are a nice spice. This is definitely a perfume you'd take with you to wear all evening out. Perfect for office use too."

It took me a while before I really fell in love with this blend myself. The hard thing about creating blends is that sometimes you won't love it as much as others will and vice versa, but I try very hard to only create blends that I myself would wear. Sometimes that means creating blends I think would be liked by others and then putting my own twist on them making them blends I would wear. I think I have to do it this way or my heart is not in it. Anyway, about 4 weeks into it, after letting it sit, I started to see what the blend could be. As it "married" it became so lovely and I couldn't help but love it. It just makes me feel sassy!

So, I will be listing this in my shop over the next day or so. This is a pretty exquisite perfume and will be a tad pricier than my other blends, but I think that you will adore it. I am also working on a musk/gourmand blend now hoping to get that ready for middle/end of summer release.

Etsy Seller Spotlight Four!!!!

OK, so I am back from doing a little bit of work out if town and finally ready to feature another AMAZING Etsian! Now, this interview is a special one because this Etsy seller is also one of, if not my best customer on Etsy. Christina of 1337Art has a shop that will totally excite you. She creates items that are so fun, unique and made with love. It is so obvious when you visit her shop. I am a big fan of her gorgeous hand-made bookmarks, personally, and the fact that both of us adore our coffee. I hope you all will stop by and visit Christina's shop soon!

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Your name, age, where you're from, etc?

My name is Christina. For the first 10 years of my life I lived basically on the outskirts of Seattle in a cozy place called Normandy Park. For the last 10 years I have lived on the Key Peninsula, which is about 40 minutes from Tacoma. My favorite things to do are writing, jewelry making, collage making, photography, and spending time with my fiance. Two random facts: I like wearing black sweaters and long pants in the summer, and I've been a coffee drinker since I was 12.

Q: Your products are so much fun and many of them are unique to anything on Etsy. So, when did you first decide to start you amazing Business? What was the very first product you created?

My business originally began August of 2007 making, designing, and selling jewelry. My supervisor at work and I were really getting into making jewelry, and we both decided to get our business licenses so we can start selling our designs at shows and craft fairs. The first product I created were necklaces, then I moved to earrings and bracelets, and etc.

I've since expanded my business, and I've started off by making what are called ACEOs. These are mini pieces of art the size of trading cards. My first collage work happened in my high school Photography class. We had a semester long assignment of a "photo journal." Mine mainly consisted of bits of photos I've taken and random materials like bus tickets and exposed film. The collages just started appearing, and I'm glad they did.

Q: Where do you get some of your ideas for your products? Do you create most of your products for yourself or friends first, then sell them to others?

I shop around and find supplies that strike me. This has resulted in a *slightly* cluttered bedroom. When holidays and birthdays come around I make friends and family collaged "greeting" cards. Over the last two years I've received a lot of great feedback from them, so I've decided to experiment with the ACEOs for the public. I would say all in all I make things that please me, and if I'm making something for a certain person, I incorporate their interests. My collages and my jewelry designs are all freehand-I rarely plan them out. I just match colors and themes, and the items seem to create themselves.

Q: What is your favorite item to make and what is your most popular item with your customers?

If I had to choose I think my favorites are coffee themed items and collages. All of my coffee items seem to be very popular with customers, and my bookmarks are my biggest seller.

I also love making custom designs for people. It is such a gift to present them with the final product after all of the fun chaos of colors and sizes and style. It is such a fun ordeal.

Q: What is next on your list to create?

Collaged "greeting" cards and collaged bookmarks. Each one will be completely unique and one-of-a-kind. I can't wait to work on those!

Q: Where else do you sell your products?

There is a local farmer's market coming up next month where my friend and I will sell our items every Sunday for the entire summer. The website www.memory-of.com is going to sell one of my items once they have finished setting up their online store. My personal website is still in the works, but when it launches people will have the opportunity to purchase custom pieces as well as items not available on my Etsy.

Q: Whats your personal favorite aspect of owning an Etsy shop?

The community that Etsy is. I've met a lot of great people (including you!), and before Etsy I didn't know that a large amount of people respected and understood the charms of handmade items.

Q: Where do you see your business in a year?

I see it becoming less part time and more full time. (I would love to quit my day job to spend that time working on new products and advertising!) It is possible, but it's something I'll have to truly work hard to accomplish. My goal for the next year is to at least have double the inventory and to focus more on my Collage Art.

Etsy Seller Spotlight Three!!

Happy May everyone and, specifically, Happy Cinco De Mayo! I am starting off this first full week of May by going local with my Etsy interview and spotlight. I found LiciaPots.Etsy.com while seeking out new shops to spotlight in the Promos Forum of Etsy's Community. The first thing I noticed about this shop was how incredibly unique (I use that word a lot) her items were. I think the toilet paper roll beaded pendant is what got me! I was thrilled to find out that she ran her shop from a city just North of me and that living an environmentally friendly life was a priority for her. So, I had to feature her. Without further ado, I would like to introduce you guys to LiciaPots!

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Your name, age, where your from, etc?

My name is Licia and I was born in 1976 and raised in Seattle. I am interested in living a more sustainable lifestyle and our household has taken many steps to reach that goal. One of which is we each have our own home based business. He is a landscape designer, and in addition to my part time job I have begun to take more serious steps to growing LiciaBeads. I also currently maintain each of our websites.

Several years ago I purchased a diesel vehicle which I fill with Biodiesel from waste soybean oil. Considering the mileage that I get, it is still cheaper than my last car, even with the higher cost of the fuel. Solar power and other major sustainability investments are in our future. Slowly but surely we hope to minimize the cost of living by making the right choices earlier rather than later.

This is a major part of how we make decisions, and any purchases would support our goals toward a better future.

Q: There are so many jewelry makers on Etsy and, specifically, beaded jewelry, but I found your shop full of unique and fun accessories! So, when did you first decide to start you amazing Business? What was the very first product you created?

The bead obsession began when my sister and a friend of hers started beading. I slowly began accumulating unnecessary amounts of beads from local stores around the area and started to make things for friends, family and teachers. The very first product I created was probably in 1990 when I started making single strand necklaces with letter beads for other students at my high school.

Q: Where do you get some of your ideas for your products? Do you create most of your products for yourself or friends first, then sell them to others?

I like a lot of the ideas already out there, but at the same time I don't want to do the same thing as I see. I am always thinking of ways to do something that I have not seen before. Most of my inspiration comes from nature which may be evident in the names and descriptions of my work. A lot of the inspiration comes from our landscape design business and the plants that I am around on a regular basis.

I just create them in general... I have kept a couple just for me after they were completed. I guess I grow attached. If I create for people I know, I try to customize it to their tastes. Most everything I create is intended to be available on Etsy.

Q: What is your favorite item to make and what is your most popular item with your customers?

My favorites to make are those that have a lot of color and stand out more than most basic jewelry. They tend to keep my interest when I am creating them and allow me to break more "rules" in creating them. I enjoy creating with seed beads because of the intricate patterns and designs that they allow, and the smaller the better.

Another thing I enjoy is creating custom pieces. My sister, who likes beads but doesn't have the willpower to complete a project with seed beads, likes to give me beads to create something for her. She lives only a few miles from Shipwreck Beads, which claims to be the worlds largest bead store, and I don't disagree. The custom jewelry I have made for her are among my favorites.

I can really only base my most popular item by it's etsy hearts so far. It would have to be the Toilet Paper Pendant. Everyone has a good laugh at it.

Q: What is next on your list to create?

If only there were a list. In a way I am trying to test the market for what is most saleable. I have enough beads to continue with items similar to what I already have for sale. I like working with wire, so currently I have a few projects started using some colored wire.

My sister (who has a regular opinion) is tempting me to make items with larger beads. She most recently brought me some lava beads that are 25mm and rather heavy. I have no idea how to use them... It's always in the back of my mind, those big beads need to be used somehow.

Q: Where else do you sell your products?

I only sell on Etsy. I don't want to spread myself too thin, and Etsy works for my purposes. Plus, if I sell something, I can easily buy something! What's not to like about that?

Q: Whats your personal favorite aspect of owning an Etsy shop?

I actually have two Etsy shops. LiciaPots, in which I hope to eventually sell items made from clay. The Japanese teahouse pottery studio is in the early stages of preperation. LiciaBeads is the other shop, which I opened not long ago because it made more sense to call it LiciaBeads, since I sell beads on it. The "plan" is to sell out in LiciaPots and just use LiciaBeads for the jewelry... we'll see how it works out.

I really enjoy the community aspect of being a part of Etsy. I think it is important to teach the hand makers craft to others and pass on what it means to create to other generations. The art that is available really tells a story of each person and what their world is like at that particular place and time. I like that connection, and as we get older a specific item can take us back to that place and time in history. It's like a tactile memory. I like that I am a part of it.

Q: Where do you see your business in a year?

Ultimately I would like LiciaBeads to be able to maintain itself and if I could have a little extra spending money I would not complain. I'm really just happy to be able to create and have a forum where I can express myself.

Hello all! Welcome to my second Etsy Seller Spotlight! My goal in these interviews are to focus on sellers with which I shop regularly or just plain want to know more about! So, this week's interview focuses on the latter and I would like for everyone to get to know Etsy seller Lulu's shop DippyLulu .

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Your name, age, where your from, etc?

My name is LuLu, I'm 37 and originally from London, UK but have lived in VT since 2004. I collected a couple of degrees in graphic design and typography at the London College of Printing and Norwich School of Art which led me to become obsessed with typography. I’ve been working ever since (16 years) as a freelance art editor for large publishing houses in London (Penguin, BBC, Dorling Kindersley, Harper Collins, Scholastic). It's a tough telecommute because of the time difference, but I love it.

Q: Your products are so much fun and so unique to anything on Etsy. So, when did you first decide to start you amazing Business? What was the very first product you created?

I was a buyer on Etsy for a long while and then suddenly thought well, I could do some of this selling type stuff. It was as simple as that. I'm paid to come up with ideas for my job so it wasn't hard to drift off and think of ideas for an Etsy shop. I was a collector of ACEO's and so my first products were ACEO's, two of which sold within 20 minutes of listing. At that point I was hooked! The idea of Farty products came to me because we have matches all over the house for *ahem* a certain purpose. I’m so obsessed with farts that I have extended my line to include Stinky Lites, Lady Lites, Veggie Lites (coming soon!) and a Deluxe Fart Kit (and if you believe that explanation, I have a sub-prime mortgage to sell you).

Q: Where do you get some of your ideas for your products? Do you create most of your products for yourself or friends first, then sell them to others?

Ideas come into my head while I'm doing other things, and then I file them in the back for a while. Most ideas never come out to fruition and it's only when I feel really confident that an item will be popular that I am ready to make it. Most of my products are fart related so there's little to explain how I came up with those. The Birthday Lites were torturing me for at least a couple of months before I could let them out and create them. I had been working with matchboxes and wondered what other things I could make with them, especially the empty ones. I had seen some little candle holders in a store and something struck me that they could be joined together somehow. They are an acquired taste, but I love them, and so do my buyers!

I list items in the shop as soon as they're made and test the waters that way. If items don't sell, I don't make any more and try another route. I don't like the idea of flogging dead horses. With my shop it is evident what isn't going to work when the sales don't happen.

Q: You always have really unique products as I mentioned above. What is your favorite item to make and what is your most popular item with your customers?

I'm only ever happy with a steel rule and scalpel in my hands. That sounds dangerous, but it's not, honest. I love making the Birthday Lites as there are so many little components to cut and stick together. It's nice to think they're specifically bought to give as a little gift. The most popular item with customers has to be Farty Lites. I think I made over 400 boxes over last holiday season. It was a busy and crazy time!

Q: What is next on your list to create?
I have a few ideas brewing. As I strive to be a bit different, it's nothing that I can reveal at this point I'm afraid!

Q: Where else do you sell your products?
Etsy is the only outlet at the moment.

Q: Whats your personal favorite aspect of owning an Etsy shop?
Getting paid for making silly stuff and having fun doing it.

Q: Where do you see your business in a year?
Hopefully still selling, lots of new items in my shop, and an extremely large Paypal balance.

OK, Earth Day was a lucky day for me. I was the lucky, lucky winner of 2 blog giveaways! I never win that kind of stuff!!
So, to say a huge "thank you", I want to introduce you to these awesome shops and show you what a lucky gal I am.

First, This Old Hen House was featuring an AWESOME artist named Justin Vining and everyone that went to his shop, picked out their favorite item and left a comment about that item, were entered into a drawing to win one of his amazing prints. I was immediately drawn (no pun intended) to his interpretation of the famous Van Gogh painting, Starry Night, and left a comment about that on her blog. Second, I stumbled upon this great blog yesterday in my Earth Day postings and found this very Eco-Friendly Etsian, Mandy Bags. Mandy was posting about her Earth Day activities on her blog yesterday mandybags.blogspot.com and I was really taken with the products she offers that are totally Eco-Friendly and so cute. I posted some of my musings on the day and right before bed, I got a lovely message from Mandy telling me that I would receive a special gift from her! I do not know what I will receive, but if it is anything like what she has in her shop, I will be thrilled! All of the items in her shop have a reduce, reuse, recycle element to them (as mentioned in her shop announcement). I love shops like this and will be back to her shop for some of her amazing totes! Please take a minute to visit these great shops and blogs. My lucky day taught me to always support other folks in their endeavors by reading their blogs, leaving comments and talking about their shops. This not only introduces our craft to the general public, but to other Etsians out there. So, keep blogging!

Love Your Mother (Earth that is....)

Anyone that knows me knows that I am very passionate about the environment. I started, many years ago, acting in a more respectful way when it came to my daily consumption of goods. The first step I took was starting my candle company around 6 years ago. I wanted to create candles that used naturally occurring scents and, at the same time, helped the air you would breath instead of hurting it. Many people were not aware of how dangerous those ever-popular paraffin candles were (are). When a product actually steals healthy oxygen from your air and replaces it with petroleum by-product toxins, you will not have healthy air to breath. So, years later, I am still making those candles and still feel passionate about the environment, but I have added many things to my list of Eco-Friendly practices. Today, I want to focus on the 2 things I feel are crucial to change in your daily life and changes that I have committed to making. First: Plastic Bags-Not only are these another petroleum product (we all know that more petroleum products mean more coal and oil use throughout the world), but they are piling up by the MILLIONS in our landfills, oceans, streams and streets. Many retail outlets are wising up and either charging for plastic bags or getting rid of them all together (Whole Foods is a great example of a company who has made the decision to rid their stores of plastic bags). Well, I made 2 big changes to my shopping habits. First: I now reuse a small amount of plastic bags and keep them handy in my car for those unplanned stops to the store and so I won't ever be without them. Second: I always have 4 or 5 large reusable totes made from heavy duty plastic or cloth that never need to be thrown out or recycled. I purchased a great tote made out of plastic "yarn" from an Etsy Shop called Claudia's Creations. It is super durable and made completely from plastic shopping bags! I love it and use it for many different things from a purse to a shopping bag.

OK, Second big change I have made is no longer purchasing water or any other plastic drink bottles from the store. There are so many options for SAFE bottles that can be reused and travel with you. Many places like Starbucks will let you fill your container with the beverage of your choice so your don't have to worry about finding a place to recycle your paper or plastic cup. If you do find yourself with one of these plastic or paper cups, then you can keep a bag in your car with you for these items and every few days remove the items from the bag and recycled them at your home or office. The point is, you do not have to thrown these things away just because you don't have an immediate way to recycle. I also encourage everyone to demand your favorite coffee shops and fast food establishments have recycling bins available for their packaging and cups.

So, bring your own bags cups or keep a bag in your vehicle for all those items that can be recycled! It is really easy and once you start looking at these items in a different way, you will act in a different way. So, make the commitment and change your habits! It is one of the best decisions you can make!

So, I am branching out and, finally, getting to know another Etsy shop owner a little better! I have been interviewed several times myself by other amazing Etsy sellers so it is time for me to reach out. I patronize so many great shops on Etsy, but this shop has got to be in my Top 5. This week I am interviewing Wash The Day Away.Etsy.Com, a shop that specializes in Aromatherapy products containing organic ingredients for your body and face. I am in IN LOVE with their products and want you to know more about this great seller, Rebecca.

Here we go:

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Your name, age, where your from, etc?

My name is Rebecca, I am 26, and I grew up in Menasha, WI. Last year I moved to Madison, WI to go to Massage School. I live with my Husband and our 3 year old son. We have 2 cats. I have always been Artistic/Creative and have done Photography, Sculpting, Painting, Writing, Knitting, Drawing...all kinds of stuff. I love to read, and I love Movies. Usually Psychological Thrillers, or Dark Humor Indie films. I love any movie by Wes Anderson, or with John Cusak in it! I also really love music. 80's stuff like Lou Reed, David Bowie, Iggy Pop. I also love good Indie music like Belle and Sebastian, Blonde Redhead, Cat Power. And I'm a HUGE tea head! I'm a freak for TeaNoir's Tea, the best I've ever had. I probably have like $60 worth of her tea at any given time. She has an etsy store too and everyone should go check it out!

Q: I absolutely ADORE your products. They have single handedly changed the health of the skin on my face! So, when did you first decide to start your amazing Aromatherapy Business? What was the very first product you created?

Thank you so much! There isn't a better reward than hearing stuff like that from customers. I first decided to start my own business last Christmas. I took an Aromatherapy course through my Massage school and my Mom bought me a bunch of Pure Essential Oils that Christmas. My passion was rekindled! (My Aunt and I used to dabble in making stuff when I was 18) But I started to make stuff, and found I was much better at it. My friends loved the stuff I made so much that I decided to make some money off of it! The very first thing ever I made was some Lavender soap with My Aunt when I was 18. It...probably could have been used as a weapon. [laugh] It was heavy and so loaded with Lavender buds it could have scratched the skin off someone's face if they used it. We had a good laugh over it. But the first thing I made when my passion was rekindled was some Cologne and Aftershave for my Husband.

Q: Where do you get some of your ideas for your products? Do you create most of your products for yourself first, then sell them to others?

I guess a good answer would be my weird love for experimentation. I don't like to be boring. In the Aromatherapy course I took, (I was taught by Kathy Keville, she wrote many books on Aromatherapy) I would come up with Essential oil combinations that made Kathy say, "Ooooh! Nice! You've done this before haven't you?" It made me blush. [laugh] The other part of it is, I do create some things for myself. Like the Black Honey soap you love, I made that for me. And I was so amazed by it's effectiveness, I had to share it with others. And actually, most of the products I initially make for myself, turn out to be best sellers. Or if I make them initially for a friend. I think that it's the personalization that make those products special. Some extra love goes into those. :)

Q: You always have really unique and organic products. What is your favorite ingredient to use and what is your most popular item with your customers?

I can only pick 1? [laugh] I can say my favorites really change with the seasons. Lately I really love Aloe Butter & Coconut Oil. And my favorite Essential Oils lately are Ylang Ylang and Sandalwood. My most popular product with my Customers is by far the Black Honey Soap.

Q: I check your Etsy shop all of the time to see what new products you have listed! What is next on your list to create?

That's cool to hear! Well, tonight I was planning a couple new soaps. I just got some new extract powders today that I'm excited to experiment with. 1 idea is for a Pore Refining Soap made with Strawberry Extract, and the other is Anti-aging with Apple Extract. I also have quite a few things that are new and already made that I just haven't listed yet. The other night I made a Body Balm the same scent as the Apricot Jasmine Body Oil I made because I love it so much! It's nice stuff!

Q: Where else do you sell your products?

I have sold some wholesale to Paper Sparrow in New York, Stellaria in Chicago, and Muskie Bay Resort (My In-laws Fishing Resort) in Nestor Falls, ON, Canada. Other than that I often sell locally to people who hear about me through either Etsy or my personal Blog - http://blackdreams.livejournal.com/. Q: Whats your personal favorite aspect of owning an Etsy shop?

Working at home in my Pajamas! [laugh] I'm lucky enough to have a Husband who's so supportive he works a full time job and
lets me be a stay at home Mom and do Wash The Day Away (and the occasional Massage). I also just love to experiment, and read up on related things to what I do. I also love being able to, like you mentioned, really change people's skin for the better. That's very satisfying.

Q: Where do you see your business in a year?

In another year, I would like to see my Etsy business itself really grow. I would also like to sell more outside of Etsy. Be it Craft Shows, or the Farmer's Market. Maybe another Website all my own. My long term goal is to have my own actual store and to be able to really make a living off of it!

New perfume "Summer Love"

As many of you know, I am a fanatic about scents! I am in love with all things that smell good, especially when they are natural. My line of Botanical Perfumes "GA Essence" embodies all things natural and lovely. I worked very hard to come up with blends that would be unique, yet appeal to men and women. Well, after many months of no blending, I have listed my new scent for the girls only: Summer Love! Summer Love is what I think of when I think of the warmer months and the arrival of Spring and Summer. Summer Love is full of gorgeous floral notes, like Neroli, Orange Blossom Water Absolute, Magnolia, Jasmine and lovely Citrus oils. This is such a pretty and feminine scent and will make any girl feel special. There are no synthetic fragrances in any of my blends, just rare and precious absolutes and essential oils.

Getting Creative

So I have been waking up in the middle of the night lately thinking of how I can create some really unique fragrances. Something that makes my fragrances stand out from the others. I look at all the other Natural Perfumer's out there in awe of what they create and I wonder "what can I do to make a name for myself?".

So, I have been working on some really fun infusions. For those of you who know the basics of making perfume, you have (basically) 3 options for bases: perfumer's alcohol (in various forms), oil (either Jojoba or Fractionated Coconut) or Wax base for solid perfumes. I am not one of the lucky ones who can afford perfumer's alcohol yet so my medium is Jojoba (a liquid wax that doesn't go rancid). I just started the process of infusing some tea roses. If you have ever taken a whiff of "Tea Rose" perfume by Perfumer's Workshop you will know that it is an amazingly feminine scent. My sister is a big fan of this and inspired me to find ways to recreate this beautiful scent.

I have finally been able to use some infusions I started months ago. Blackberry Honey, Brown Sugar, Coconut are just a few things that I am playing with right now. I find that these 3 infusions mixed with some Jasmine Grandi are sweet and rich. I have been wearing this new blend trying to figure out what else they need. My goal is to come up with a Gourmand that can be worn by men and women. I think I am on to something. When I get it finished I will let you know.

Finally, I asked a friend of mine who is very new to Natural Perfumery what she would like in a custom scent. Like many of my friends, she referred to some popular synthetic scents made by Bath & Body Works and other companies. Her favorites were Spearmint, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Sandalwood and anything "clean". So here is my project for the next few weeks: I have to come up with a scent for her that contains these elements. Any mints can be a challenge and I have never taken them on. This will be fun and I hope to fully convert her to the Natural Perfume side!

I hope to add a few new scents to my line soon and maybe this will be one!

Hi all-

Well, this is my first blog and I look forward to writing about my adventures in my business and elsewhere! For those of you who came to my blog from the site, then you are familiar with my products. If not, here is a little about me. My name is Nikki and I am the owner of Gabriel's Aunt. I specialize in high-end, natural candles and, just recently, Natural Perfumes. The perfumes have been something I have wanted to create for a long time and now I am finally doing it. The Natural Perfume Community is small, but growing every day. I have created 5 perfumes as of now. All are distinctly different and so much fun to wear. From the super sexy "Sweet Love" that has Australian Sandalwood, Nutmeg, Tahitian Vanilla, Cocoa Absolute & Rose to the Sweet, feminine and floral "Sweet Love" that has Orange Blossom, Magnolia Flower, Geranium & Neroil. Right now I am working on some unique blends using many of my own infusions. Things like, coconut, honey, brown sugar and other things. They both are planning on offering classes either this summer or early Fall so look into it if you are interested in knowing more.

I think things are about to become really exciting for me and my business! I am waiting on a review of my candles to come out in the Fall Edition of the Massage Therapy Journal on August 1st. This is the first time my products have garnered any sort of attention in a major (or not so major) publication. Also, the funky and oh-so-cool indie shopping site, www.wickedlychic.com, is writing a review on my candles in their upcoming summer "Beautify Me" Column.

So, there is a lot going here at my little company. I look forward to getting my perfumes and candles into the hands of many more of you! I will post the reviews as soon as they come out!
